Dissection Part 1 - Muscles of the Head and Neck

Functions of Muscles:

• Masseter - to close the mouth (specifically for chewing) 

• Digastric - pulls down, helps open your mouth

• Mylohyoid - pushes the tongue up so that you can swallow, raises hyoid to swallow

• Sternohyoid - lowers the hyoid bone so that your tongue can go down

• Sternothyroid - to compress the larynx (voice box), helps you make different noises, speech muscle 

• Sternomastoid (sternocleidomastoid in humans) - rotate your neck left to right
